Willing to Try:
-----Basil Burgers with Sun-Dried Tomato Mayonnaise. A Taste of Home recipe.
-----BLT Burger with Bacon Mayonnaise. It has both bacon mayonnaise and candied bacon. I am a lit leery of the candied-bacon-on-a-sandwich-idea but generally get very excited at just the enthusiasm that Kelsey Nixon has for any recipe she suggests.

-----Yet another reason I will block people on Twitter....you mysteriously end tweets with a word for the male genital organ. I don't need to know why.
-----Just an observation...shouldn't you notice/care when your Facebook profile photo shows your plumber's crack?

-----I do not watch but a friend has worked on Walking Dead. PSA to those interested: There is a new episode tonight.
-----Seriously, a critic on the Cooking Channel said that a place was good to go for comfort food on the weekends because "on the weekend, you're hungover." I did some quick Googling and apparently a lot of people decide to go to oyster bars when hungover.

-----There is such a thing as Mad Dog Watermelon? At one point, I found a list of "bum wines" and started a very short-lived adventure in which I intended to try all of them. My adventure started and ended by buying a bottle of RedGrape "Mad Dog (Mogen David)20/20"...one taste made my tongue numb. It would take a lot to convince me to try Mad Dog Watermelon.
~ ~ ~ I think it was BumWine.com where I found that list. "Some test subjects report a slight numbing agent in MD 20/20, similar to the banana paste that the dentist puts in your mouth before injecting it with novocain."
~ ~ ~ I looked around and found that Watermelon is apparently a flavor of Mad Dog 20/20. There are several flavors and I will be trying NONE.
Toddler on telling me to check diaper:
"Foul,foul."
Me:
"I believe you."
"How Campus Racism is a Postelection Reality." One wonders how much of this undercurrent will come to the surface as Obama's second term progresses.
---There was mention of a Black Student Union (which is inclusive of all who want to join) and possible attempts to start a White Student Union. I think there would be much scrutiny and criticism if any campus succeeds in having an (inclusive) White Student Union.

-----Wow...90210 is FINALLY having actual college scenes vs. partying and all sorts of problems that are usually faced by people who are older than the typical college student. Most often there hasn't even been a hint of a book (and certainly no campus).
-----The president of Mexico is trying to get the name changed to just that..."Mexico."
-----"Black Voters Look to Leverage Their Loyalty"
-----I did not know that President Obama did not thank God in his Thanksgiving address this year. I also did not know that he has not thanked God in this address for four years.
-----In October, there was an Associated Press poll which concluded that a majority (51%) of the U.S. is prejudiced against black people. A survey done last year stated that 52% had anti-Hispanic attitudes.
-----Arafat's body is being exhumed. This is an effort to see if Israel poisoned him. I am worried that the findings might destroy the Palestine-Israel truce (or cause just enough violence that it will be tolerated but destroy many lives).
-----I might try making a cranberry salsa that contains jalapeno for Thanksgiving next year!
-----Guinness and Filet Mignon Chili. :-) Oddly enough, this recipe reminds me of Zombie Apocalypse Picnics and my thyroid issues.:-)

-----Apparently, the Discovery Channel is canceling Dirty Jobs and American Chopper. I haven't found anything saying why either show is being canceled.
-----So far, I am dubbing this day Lurksgiving. There have been 118 pageviews and no comments.
-----This year you can vote on which turkey gets the Whitehouse pardon.

-----Nice (sarcasm). Apparently, in NYC students will only be given two days off for winter break. I am sure Sandy was such an enjoyable break from school (more sarcasm).
-----Twitter is so full of people not interacting lately that I have decided to start posting some Pink Floyd lyric . Of course there is no interaction....so, no one has picked up on this the two times I have done it. "Hello, Is there anybody in there? Just nod if you can hear me. Is there anyone home?"
-----Please, try to cheer up anyone you know who is being made to work on Thanksgiving or really unreasonable hours both days. At least where I used to live, Papa John's is open pretty much normal hours all three days...I hope they are merciful and consult with their employees in scheduling. I have a friend who works at a big box retailer which is guaranteed to be extra-chaotic and his wife is preparing him a "Zombie Apocalypse" kit to cope through this day.

Are you ready for Thanksgiving Day?

I am annoyed....really annoyed that Pinterest has not let me edit boards for two days. Hampering my future Thanksgiving recipe organization.
If you are curious, here is my Pinterest account.

A recipe I am trying for Thanksgiving this year:
Cinnamon Sugar Cake with Brown Sugar Cinnamon Buttercream. A pretty double layer cake. The first double layer cake effort by me in a little under twenty years and I have never been taught to do frosting pretty (only functional and yummy). I am hoping it turns out looking nice.
~ ~ ~ I need to figure out how far ahead I can make it. I am timing it around taking care of Little One and all the Thanksgiving-uber-oven-usage that will be going on this week. :-)

On the Maybe List for 2013:
-----Onion Mushroom Stuffing. It is described as moist and not too solid.
-----White Castle Stuffing. For the amusement factor.
-----30 Second Sangria. For breaks during the days of meal prep.

Next year, I will definitely be making this really awesome green bean casserole that our friend came up with. I just need to hunt around for the recipe which is lost somewhere in the depths of my communications with him. Best green bean casserole ever. If I remember correctly, it has a lot of bacon. :-)

Black Thursday makes me sad.

No, I will not be going shopping on Black Friday.
Plus, I am DISGUSTED by Black Thursday.

The backlash about Black Thursday is apparently increasing. There are certainly a lot more Walmart employees considering a walk out. At least 35,000 signatures have been collected opposing Target opening on Thanksgiving Day.

From what I understand,
JCPenney is a store that will not be open on Thanksgiving.
Maurice's and Ulta Beauty will open Thursday.

I have sent ULTA a message asking if it is true that they will be open.

Misc. Recipes and Food.....

-----I want to try Hummus Mashed Potatoes. My friend who REALLY likes hummus said that these don't sound good...but I will make them and have her taste them when I do. I still think they might be good mashed potatoes.
-----Chicken with Tahini Sauce. The sauce is served over cardamom-spiced chicken. 3 health benefits of tahini.

-----Wasabi Mashed Potatoes. I wanted to try it both ways...topped with crumbled bacon and topped with shiso leaves. I have never cooked with shiso leaves but it should provide a lighter taste than the bacon.
~ ~ ~ I still need to make Chive and Parsley Mashed Potatoes (nice green color and recipe uses basic ingredients). I wonder if I could use the chive and parsley oil for some other dishes. :-)
~ ~ ~ Looking for "soy sauce mashed potatoes" is producing the weirdest results. No, I don't want an actual recipe for this.:-)

-----Smoked Ribs with Guinness BBQ Sauce

-----Bacon-Wrapped Pork with Spicy Mango-Basil Relish. Sounds like it might be interesting to try.

-----Cilantro Pepita Dressing and Dip. A low carb recipe.

---A McCormick (spices) commercial just referred to Thanksgiving as the most important meal of the year.
---I like the way that Rachel Ray gets tomatoes so they are easily peeled....by putting them in an ice bath. Something Rachel said that I have never noticed is why she likes the panko bread crumbs...they are "big and snowflake-like."
---You know you are tired when someone on TV says "low-sodium chicken broth" and you hear "Minnesota-ian chicken broth." :-)
-----Had an interesting talk about some of the cancer awareness scams that are so prevalent....oh wait, those are "fundraising."

In the UK, things people are posting on Facebook and Twitter are getting them arrested. This may not be a popular opinion in the era of "free speech" advocates but my reaction is that if you are indicating/inciting violence, then you should expect arrests/questioning/etc. to possibly occur. Seriously, how exactly in terms of  public safety, is the government supposed to determine satire, just anger and so on??? Clearly, it is easy in some cases to figure out that there was a moment of passion.....but then again look at all the "warning signs" that come up online in the social networks of shooters and bombers. Road rage is not the only rage that people need to be more aware of and take steps to prevent. Stop the internet rage.
Seattle's Best Coffee is planning to open thousands of drive-thru only cafes. I wonder what the hours on these will be.

Well, today is Charles Manson's birthday.
-----A set of Aluminum John Deere tumblers would easily be on my friend's wishlist.

In My Life

-----Too early to wake up. The wind is only going about 15 miles per hour...but it is gusting so strongly that it is keeping us up. Sigh.
-----It was supposed to get very cold today. Now the forecast is saying that it will reach 60 degrees. I wonder if the winds and 80% chance of rain will cancel any warmth out.
-----At least yesterday was nice and we expected that to be the last nice weather day. Little One and I went on a long walk and played until it started getting cold. Treasures were found, tiny pinecones, sticks and a big pebble.

-----When I get a chance, I am likely going to remove "Norton Confidential" from this computer. All it does is crash. Thanks HP, for installing this lovely bit of annoyance.

----I noticed that Free Comic Book Day for 2013 will be on May 4. That is awesome as it will also be "May the 4th Be With You."
-----I sent for the Pottery Barn Teen catalog (FREE). I want to get a feel for if it has anything that some of my nieces might like. I have no clue what kind of decor Pottery Barn has for teenagers.

-----I sent for the Burpee 2013 catalog. I think that should come out in December. I grew up with this catalog. I am interested in seeing what will be offered in the way of tomatoes this year.
Burpee's "New for 2013" list  includes:
~ ~ ~ The first sweet corn that can be grown in a container!
~ ~ ~ Michigan State Collection Kiwi. These can take the cold up to Zone 5! A good source of potassium.
~ ~ ~ The world's largest sauce tomato. Two pound tomatoes! The description says that one tomato fills an entire sauce jar! Tomato gravy is mentioned...I have never had this and should look for recipes.
~ ~ ~ Sun King Broccoli. Particularly heat tolerant.
~ ~ ~ A particularly heat-resistant spinach. 250 seeds for $5.95

In My Life.....

-----Found that my eye problems do have some hope. Oddly enough, I need to go to a pediatric ophthalmologist  These visits will very likely be frequent, expensive and frequently expensive! Pediatric ophthalmologists are the only eye doctors with enough education to possibly help adults with true alternating exotropia (one eye is always going out).
-----I want to try "cusabi hamburgers." Recipes vary but cusabi is basically ranch dressing, cucumber dressing and wasabi. Hmmm.
------I really do need to get on reading "Pearl S. Buck's Oriental Cookbook." My mother loves this author. Maybe I can find some recipes in here that can be modified for a diabetic/heart-healthy diet.

-----Getting our homeschool environment ready. We are going to do homeschool for pre-school. It will be something like the environments that people create when doing "Montessori at Home." I am excited.

-----Little One got a new pair of fuzzy slippers yesterday....wanted to wear them immediately but has to wait until later when we take pajamas off. They are yellow, sock-like and have frogs on them.
-----Temporary tattoos are a fun thing at our house right now. We did airbrushed stars and the moon at a craft festival after a parade earlier in the season. Now Little One has a pink star and a purple star. There are 19 more tattoos in the package and each is supposed to last for 2 weeks and 2 days.
-----Trying baby oil gel for after Little One's baths. I love the smell and benefits of baby oil. I have never used it in gel form before.
-----The apples I have been eating are too hard. They are perfect with leftover McDonald's tangy barbecue poured on a little at a time. I have strange habits.
-----I am making Ranch Roasted Potatoes tonight. If we don't have Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing Mix in a cabinet somewhere, I do have a recipe for making homemade ranch dressing mix.
-----I am taking a class on informal logic that starts soon. I have studied some of this before and find some of it useless. We shall see.
-----Possibly getting my hair trimmed today. :-)

-----A friend lent me "The Wounded Spirit" by Frank Peretti. So far, I would recommend this book for anyone who has been bullied or abused.

-----Tired of the Rocky Mountain High references regarding marijuana legalization. John Denver was not referring to drugs.

O.J. Simpson might be freed during a retrial? Maybe a good time to add to 1974's documentary "Juice on the Loose."

Cheap-rah's Favorite Things 2012....
48 Days of Oprah's Favorite Things From a Frugal/Handmade Perspective

INITIAL REACTION:
The first item on Oprah's famous favorite things list this year is a Lafco Soap Set. Unfortunately, I could not laugh at the price. The soaps weigh a little over half a pound (8.5 ounces)...still 17 dollars for a bar of soap or $238 dollars for 14 bars of soap???

REALIZATION:
Considering that most bathroom soap is like 3.5 or 4 ounces that means you pay $8.50 for half a bar of the Lafco soap. Hmm...after doing that math, I don't think the $17 dollar price tag is so unreasonable if you are just picking out a bar that someone will really like. Cheap-rah is not close-minded.

THE STUFF:

The $238 gift set created exclusively for Oprah and her fans, consists of:
---Cilantro Orange...has a hint of watercress.
---Fresh Cut Gardenia...includes both the scent of the blossoms and the scent of the leaves.
---Rosemary Eucalyptus. "A scent mix of sweet eucalyptus, white floral and a touch of rosemary."
---Champagne. "Clean and sparkling; with notes of ginger, grapefruit, lemon, and raspberry."
---French Lilac...also has touches of rose petal and jasmine.
---Duchess Peony...also has camellia blossoms.
---Feu de Bois. Based on the name, Cheap-ruh had no idea what this scent would be. Apparently it is the scent of burning wood with a hint of mountain spruce. I am curious about this one as the only thing that it reminds me of is small forest fires.
---Marine. "An airy ozone fragrance that smells like clean air by the sea."
---Sea and Dune. "The scent of sea grass, sand, summer sky and the ocean."
---Chamomile Lavender
---Redwood
---Celery Thyme
---Marseilles Fig
---Daffodil
Cheap-rah Considerations:There is complimentary shipping on orders over $100 (great if you are getting the gift set or multiple gifts). Otherwise, the website does not state how much shipping is! Cheap-rah may not be so open-minded on the cost of the individual soaps after all.

COMPANION STUFF YOU CAN MAKE:
---"Champaign and Roses" soap
---Champagne Bubble Bath. Cheap-rah like's that it only takes 2 ingredients! A 3rd ingredient, glitter, is optional. Bathing in any amount of glitter does not sound appealing to me. Here is a champagne bubble bath recipe with a few more ingredients.
---Champagne Face Masks. The high antioxidant and polyphenol content of the grapes is apparently good for your skin. :-)

This post is a work-in-progress. :-)

SKOTIDAKIS JALAPEÑO YOGURT DIP sounds interesting. It is Strained Greek Probiotic Yogurt. I would like to try something like this on hamburgers.

Dave's Ghost Pepper Jolokia Private Reserve Hot Sauce. If I could afford such, I would get this for one of my brothers for Christmas...with the caution to try it a few drops at a time. Obviously, very hot. Spicy and apparently has a distinct fruity flavor (sits over top of the sauce's heat (so, I wonder if the passion fruit juice mellows it out a little?). This comes in a wooden gift box.
"Trans Fat Free Foods: What's the Truth?"
Apparently, the microwave popcorn I ate this week might not have been good for me as far as trans fat goes...I will have to check the label. It did have "extra butter."

:-)
