Thursday Thirteen.....

1. CHEESECAKE:
-----Strawberry Yogurt Cheesecake
-----Holiday Mincemeat-mallow Cheesecake

2.

The Literacy Site
You can click daily. Sponsors give the books. No strings attached.

3. Could your kitchen pass a health inspection?
---Our refrigerator has the temperature gauge that is just numbers that are different levels of coldness. I suppose it would be a good idea to get an appliance thermometer with temperatures. The article says they are inexpensive but I have never seen them about town....I will have to do some looking. I am sure our fridge gets VERY cold...it has a tendency to do annoying things like freezing the milk and veggies.
---Some people just refuse to believe the advice about proper thawing. I got sick after someone assured me that pork was thawed properly a few summers back (I later found out that it was left on the counter to thaw and it had not been just put there as indicated ). Apparently, the people who served it must have been taught that this was the way to cook things and no amount of health education is going to change that in their minds (neither is the fact that they themselves have gotten sick or that I had to be under doctor care) . They actually don't understand why I refuse to eat at their house. If the persons I am speaking of  read this, they would STILL be able to justify how they go about thawing.

4.
-----Bill ccollectors are tracking the activities of debtors through social media.
-----A "spending fast"  would be a great way to pay off debt and I am sure there are many ways to make it fun.
-----A mailman made $35,000 from stolen JCPenney coupons. Investigators are still trying to determine how much was made from other coupons. What do you think of his reasoning in doing this?

5. 5 THINGS:
-----5 Chinese dining etiquette rules. Including how to avoid sending fishermen to Davy Jones' locker.
-----"5 Things You Use Every Day That Are Getting Awesome Upgrades"
-----5 Things You Should Say to Your Children. Things that should be said a lot.

6. MUSICIANS BEHAVING BADLY:
-----Miley Cyrus voted worst role model by teenage girls..
-----Lady Gaga fragrance will smell of "blood and semen."   I hope that never makes it on shelves. I could just see someone actually replacing it with one of the real items (depending on how authentic the smell of this fragrance is).

7.

Preview of this book on Google.

8. SUPER BOWL CRIME:
-----Super Bowl a magnet for under-age sex trade.
-----10,000 prostitutes will work Dallas during the Super Bowl. This includes those who are under-age.
-----Department of Homeland Security's "If You See Something, Say Something" campaign comes to the Super Bowl.

9. EDUCATION:
-----Many college students learn little. I would like to add to this that some courses are impossible to learn anything from. There are teachers that have no business teaching (and don't actually do so).
-----Pennsylvania schools experiment with types of segregation.

10. Are expired drugs effective? If, for some reason, it was determined you were to be executed, would you want it to be with drugs that were expired by at least three years?!!

11.

 If I can ever get my Raynaud's Phenomenon so that it doesn't affect me that much....I would love to go Zorbing in the snow. From what I understand, the price at Windham is 20 dollars per person and I think that is very reasonable.

12.
-----Investigation into the culling (by gun) of at least 100 sled dogs.
-----Mystery of 200 dead cows in Wisconsin solved. Also a few of the other massive animal deaths now have explanations.

13.So, did you get a lot of snow this week? Even after several shovelings the snow that Husband had to dig the car out of was higher than the hood. A neighbor was using a snowblower and the snow was almost to his waist (and almost over where the snow blows out). Travel was IMPOSSIBLE for a while....we saw no cars.
is a post-in-progress. :-)

PARTICIPATE IN THURSDAY THIRTEEN. :-)

In Egypt.....

-----A Google exec who went to join the protests in Egypt is missing. The scary thing about this is that the people he was with felt the government was going to commit a war crime on Saturday and they were "all ready to die."
-----Citizens from countries around the world are being evacuated from Egypt. I wish there were a way this evacuation could be quicker and that Egyptian citizens could be helped to leave, too.
-----"Restore + Save the Egyptian Museum!" Facebook group. I can't believe that someone would tear the heads off of two mummies.  I don't know why anyone would desecrate the dead like that. Maybe it was to make some political point or out of anger that whatever they were searching for to loot wasn't there? Kudos to the members of the public who are trying to protect the museums....I hope they stay safe while doing so.

In My Life.....

-----Making some Spanish Rice in a little bit. :-)
-----We have a Cousin driving in to visit from Atlanta and another Cousin flying in from out East. Both have delayed their plans until mid-week. Apparently we are to have horrid amounts of snow and bad weather.
-----6 light bulbs decided to go out at the same time. I think it makes things look dismal. Of course, they were not all the same kind of light. Two of them were outdoor lights and have been replaced. One we moved from an optional lamp so we would have a light over the stove. 3 others are everyday overhead lights that will be replaced this week. I want more light.
-----We watched "Twilight:Eclipse" today. It was pretty good except for the end....a real George Lucas Padme-and-Anakin-romantic-script moment (unlike the rest of Star Wars, that is not a good thing). I have not seen the second Twilight movie yet so I am missing part of the storyline.

-----Police officer made up story about getting shot in the chest?

Unconscious Mutterings

A weekly word association meme. The idea is that eventually you might learn something about yourself.

Agency ::
Government agency. Agencies are supposed to help people. Agent Smith. We watched the actor who played Agent Smith in "The Wolf Man" the other day.

Ministrations ::
Ministrations are to help...again something an agency is supposed to do. Administrations.

Charlie ::
Call sign for an airplane. Charlie Brown. Charles Schultz. Two-buck Chuck. Charles Schwab Investments. Charlie Chaplin. Charlie Brown....he's a clown...that Charlie Brown. Charles Atlas. Charles Manson. Referring to the Viet Cong as Victor Charlie. Charlie Sheen is having problems again. Chuck....the sitcom and what Charlie Brown was called by Peppermint Pattie.

Hard as a brick....a stuffing or fruitcake that is overcooked. Bricking someone in-Edgar Allen Poe. Lego. Another Brick in the Wall. I was not impressed by the School of Rock performance of Another Brick in the Wall. Laying bricks. Like talking to a brick wall. Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall. The Yellow Brick Road...remake of the Wizard of Oz-The Whiz....the newest remake idea which means Willow Smith as Annie. Throwing a brick through a window when disagreeing with someone (usually political or religous). Paver bricks. Decorative bricks in a garden. When people are re-doing their landscaping and put the old bricks up on Craig's List.

Mom and Dad. Growing up without a father...not just fathers who have abandoned their children, but the loneliness when a father passes away. "Da-Da" is often the first word a child says.Eddie's Father. The Parent Trap. The Sound of Music. My friend is part of a dad's group. We are keeping another friend's Dad in our prayers-he fell and has some sort of brain hemorrhaging. The Cosby Show.

Zoned ::
Re-zoning a house. Corner lots are usually easier to get re-zoned as partially a business. Zoning out. In the zone. It can be very easy or very difficult to get the zoning board to approve things...and sometimes a very political process.

Direct ::
Candid. To tell what to do or where to go. Not side-stepping. To direct an orchestra or band...I used to have a basic idea of how to do this (but have forgotten almost all of what I knew). Choir director. Hearing it straight from the horse's mouth. Let me be direct. Directing a play or other acting production. Dino de Laurentiis passed away recently. Clan of the Cave Bear. Underground caverns.

Michigan works to "speed" burials for the poor.
Why did I put speed in quotes??....because some of these people have been awaiting burial since 2008!
---I am sure there were many areas of luxury that could have been cut a little-for  decency and dignity.
---I am also sure that someone in the public would have donated to help with this issue had they known about it.
---Perhaps there is a Church somewhere in the country with a burial ground that might step forward to help?
---Or maybe civilians can't help without clearing bureaucratic red tape....more money that could be going to the common decency of a burial.
-----Bhutan monk may go to prison for possessing cigarettes. It is a fourth-degree felony in his country.

-----It seems that Ted Williams, "The Man With the Golden Voice," may still be trying to make a recovery (this from his comment while helping a homeless friend). Apparently, he may have left rehab due to the feeling of being exploited.

Friday Fill-Ins

1. Up _____.
up and away. Up on the rooftop, reindeer pause.

2. _____ going around.
It's going around. There always seems to be something "going around" anymore. Please make sure to get your flu and whooping cough vacinations.

3. Coats and scarves, mittens and boots: _____.
I do not like mittens-only gloves for me. I have Raynaud's Phenomenon...so I think of these things OFTEN during the winter. Raynaud's Phenomenon can be weird-not necessarily the intensity of cold that causes a problem....sometimes, it is just the mere presence of cold.

4. _____ a nice back rub.
I would often like. I get back pains in so many areas of my back. Husband is getting better at giving them. A gentle back rub given by someone other than oneself always seems to feel so much more helpful.

5. I'm thinking about _____.
making sure I don't make errors in my typing, my to-do list for the day,the smell of clementines on my fingers, going to the restroom, what to have for lunch. This is where the thoughts end as it is very important to head to the restroom when you need to.

6. _____ be _____.
Let bygones be bygones. I have a HARD time forgiving the past when the person still insists on causing problems in the present.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to _____, tomorrow my plans include _____ and Sunday, I want to _____!
Tonight: House tidying. Finally making the Vegan Chocolate Cake. Washing the pretty bedspread (depicts a wolf and an Indian Dream Catcher) that Brother bought us for Christmas.
Saturday: Sorting beans-I have a LOT to sort. Looking up bean recipes to add to repertoire. I will be making something with Great Northern beans for a change-we normally eat a LOT of black beans.
Sunday: Resting.

Banana & Cashew butter Sandwich

submitted by Sanghi at ifood.tv

Banana and Cashew Butter Sandwich recipe

We are making this for breakfast or lunch next month.
---The process for obtaining the cashew butter sounds super-easy.
---I am not sure what kind of toasted bread we will use.
---I hope that the cashew butter goes well with some kind of jam.

Ad Hoc at Home.....

A recipe book full of home cooking and comfort foods. Of course, these are from Thomas Keller so some of them do have a lot of ingredients. A lot less complicated than Keller's other recipes. Teaches a lot of techniques from the professional kitchen that can be very helpful to the home cook. This book is on my Amazon Wish List....but in the meantime I am searching out what blogging and articles I can find for recipes.
:-)

---Article and excerpt from the book. Recipes for Caramelized Sea Scallops, Iceberg Lettuce Slices,Rainbow Chard and Brownies.
---Chocolate Chip Cookies. I have not cooked with molasses sugar yet.
---Blow Torch Prime Rib Roast
---Keller's Roast Chicken
---Chicken Mar i Muntanya. Multi-layered. Somewhat like paella.
---Potato Pave
---Brined Pork Tenderloin. Includes instructions for curing lemons.
---Fig-Stuffed Roast Pork Loin
---Leek Bread Pudding
---Chicken Soup With Dumplings.Has quit a list of ingredients.
---Lentil and Sweet Potato Soup with Bacon and Cilantro
---Pineapple Upside-Down Cake. A recipe that I am very excited about.

Adapted some:
---Beef Stroganoff An explanation of what gray salt is.
---Crispy Braised Chicken Thighs With Olives, Lemon and Fennel. Recipe is adapted some.
---Sautéed Chicken Breasts With Tarragon. Madras curry powder is now on my "(I've) Never Cooked With List."

Adding to the (I've) Never Cooked With List

Licensed Photo. "Farmhouse Fireplace" Taken by Roger Kirby.

A list of things that I have never cooked with (but intend to try).

I have never cooked with:

-----Barley Malt Syrup. The best way to use it is along with other natural sweeteners...I do not know what sweeteners I will use it with yet.
-----Bay scallops...or any scallops. Some of the people on Hell's Kitchen make cooking scallops seem like rocket science.
-----Bean sprouts. I have eaten them.
-----Black sesame seeds. I have seen these mentioned many times and I am really eager to try them.

-----Cashew butter. Martha Stewart has a recipe for cookies that use cashew butter (with it being homemade). Ready-made cashew butter can be purchased at Trader Joe's and most health food stores.

-----Chevre (goat's cheese)
-----Chipotle Tabasco
-----Curry Powder
-----Dark sesame oil. I have cooked with regular sesame oil. When I try cooking with the dark sesame oil, I will look up several recipes (as sesame oil can go rancid quickly).
-----Dry mustard. I now use dried mustard on a regular basis.
-----Enoki mushrooms.Mild.Crunch. Used for soups and stir fries.
-----Farro
-----Fennel. Fresh fennel....I use the dried at times.
-----Fried squash blossoms
-----Frozen ramen
-----Garlic Tabasco
-----Gray Salt
-----Ground Szechuan peppercorns
-----Halloumi Cheese
-----Haricot Vert. French green beans. We will eventually be growing Haricot Vert.
-----Harissa....how to make Harissa Grilled Halibut with Grilled Red Pepper Harissa
-----Hoisin sauce. My first recipe candidate for cooking with hoison sauce is Salmon Summer Rolls with Dipping Sauce.....that way I get to learn to use the rice paper for rolling, too. I am also interested in this Beef and Green Bean Stir-fry ( I sometimes break my soy taboo and use a little soy sauce).
-----Hotel Bar butter. Part of New York cuisine for over a century.
-----Katsoubushi (dried bonito flakes). Bonito flakes are bits of dried bonito fish and they look like wood shavings. They are perfectly edible by humans....but in the United States some companies sell them as cat treats (I do not want to eat the cat treats). Bonito is a type of tuna.
-----Kelp.Supposed to increase thyroid function...and I have thyroid problems.There are some kelp items I will be trying in addition to any recipes.
-----Kombu
-----Leeks. I will be making Julia Child's Potage Parmentier (Potato and Leek Soup). Apparently, you can add green beans to Potage Parmentier....I will likely not like that as I DETEST POTATO SOUP WITH GREEN BEANS IN IT.
-----Lilacs. I want to learn the different ways they are edible.
-----Linguica. I don't know about this one. It will depend on the consistency. I do not eat a lot of pork things...partly because they sometimes make me sick.
-----Mache
-----Madras curry powder. For that matter, I have not cooked with any curry powder and have very little experience with tasting it.
-----Maltitol Syrup. A sugar-free corn syrup substitute. 90% as sweet as sugar with about half the calories.
-----Mirin. A former co-worker was surprised that I know what it is.
-----Molasses Sugar
-----Monkfish
-----Muscovado Sugar
-----Nori. I have now tried my first Nori independent of California Rolls rolls. It looked like a papery-green-jerky strip and reminded me of fish skin. I liked it.
-----Peanut oil. I would also like to cook with roasted peanut oil.
-----Pickled ginger. I have eaten it...just e never cooked with it myself.
-----Pine Nuts (never tasted one)
-----Pomegranate Molasses.
-----Powdered peanut butter. It has a lot of possible uses...sprinkled as a flavoring on or in a lot of things. I want to use it in a stir fry...perhaps Kung Pao Chicken.
-----Saigon cinnamon
-----Salsify  Rich and Creamy Salsify Gratin
-----Sansho pepper (Japanese pepper seedpods)
-----Seitan
-----Sesame Seeds
-----Sherry Wine Vinegar
-----Shimeji mushrooms. Have to be cooked....otherwise are bitter.
-----Shungiku
-----Soba Noodles. I have had them...but have not cooked them myself.  Husband makes a nice Soba Noodle dish.
-----Sorrel. I have seen empty pegs for sorrel in the refrigerated,fresh herbs at HyVee. This is an ingredient that one has to research how much to cook with...I have read that small quantities are harmless but that large quantities can be fatal. Sorrel has been cultivated for centuries.
-----Squid. I love to eat it.....but NOT pickled. Ditto for octopus on not having cooked and the same eating preferences as the squid.
-----Star Anise. Perhaps I will make the Haitian recipe Akasan.
-----Sweet Bean Paste
-----Tahini. Tomato Salad with Tahini Sauce....talks about eating it during Ramadan (I am assuming during the non-fasting hours).
-----Tamarind paste
-----Tarragon Wine Vinegar
-----Tobanjan (Chinese chili paste)
-----Wakame. If I figured a way to grow it, I would be careful since Wakame is invasive.
-----Wood ear mushrooms. My first cooking with Wood Ear Mushrooms will likely be Chicken and Wood Ear Mushroom Soup. The Chicken and Wood Ear Mushroom Soup uses peanut oil (which I have not cooked with yet).

Thursday Thirteen

1.
-----Arizona family attempts year of eating only local.  I am not sure such an experiment would work well for me...I have a hard enough time finding some things (cranberries for instance are not sold at any store here....unless it is Thanksgiving or Christmas). I will take this as a prompt to start looking for more local farms and nurseries.
-----Up To Scratch. "The Chronicles Of a Typical American Family As They Try To Survive For a Month Without Anything Bottled, Boxed, Jarred or Canned."

2.
-----Pollo Magnifico. Adapted from a ChiChi's recipe.
-----Tijuana Tacos

3. TOSTADAS:
-----Chicken and Guacamole Tostadas. According to the comments, the guacamole might be good all by itself.
-----Black Bean, Grilled Flank Steak and Guacamole Tostada Stack
-----Shrimp-and-Guacamole Tostadas. From "Cooking Light" 1999.

"It's not your stomach's fault that we are in this Recession....so, why should it suffer?"

4.

Box of 20.Hand-painted ivory chocolate heart-shaped shell.Filled with an ivory chocolate, Sicilian pistachio, cinnamon ganache and a hint of tequila.

5.  Making these soon:
---Vegan Chocolate Cake
---Turkey Salad Sandwich With Sea Salt Vinaigrette
---BLT Sandwich Spread
---Guacamole Chicken Sandwich

6. I want to make this again next month:
I think we will make one batch just like we did the first time (including the happy accident of beef broth) and the other batch will be made with the garlic olive oil that I was thinking of as an adaptation. Now we have several jars of roasted red peppers that I found on clearance for 99 cents a jar at Aldi's (some even have garlic and olive oil in them).....no paying the ridiculous supermarket price of $1.50 for one pepper!

7.
"Letting Sleeping Dogs Lie in Your Bed Can Kill You"

8. The family of the lady who snatched a child from the hospital 23 years ago is asking for compassion.
I have a hard time seeing where a shorter punishment should be given. I understand that she was sorrowful over not having children and believe that she could have wanted to come forward for 23 years (maybe was genuinely sorry despite having kept it this way for so long). I just can't get past the amount of pain caused. I guess that I would have to speak with this woman before I could come close to putting myself in her shoes. I just feel badly for the family whose child was kidnapped when they took her to the hospital during an illness....such pain and not knowing for so long. If I were a judge, I would listen to the case closely and, if I felt she were telling the truth, my reaction would be to give the twenty year minimum, plus the extra three years the child was kidnapped and a lot of counseling. If I were the lady who did the kidnapping, I would request to make full in-person or video apologies to both the child I had raised and the parents.

9. In Los Angeles, two high school students were shot when a gun in a backpack was dropped.
---One was shot in the temple and remains hospitalized (as of January 25th)....I have not read if she is out of critical condition but she has had to have a piece of her skull removed due to swelling that occurs from this type of injury.
---The parents of the other child, who was shot in the neck, are suing due to what they perceive as a lack of consistent security enforcement in the school.
---Apparently, the gun may have been carried for protection and the student who had it is now being charged with two felonies. The prosecution wants to try him as an adult which will result in some serious prison time. I am not sure why the young man thought he needed it in his backpack in the classroom...other than the fear he could not get to it quickly enough if kept in his locker. Two other students are being charged with trying to help this young man get away/remove evidence after the incident.
-----If I were the administrators of this school, I would be looking into whether other students routinely have fear for their safety.

10. The Delicious Life

11. My Shower To-Do List:
-----Get a better shower head. We have one that is efficient....I think it partly comes by this via that fact that it is like showering under a dribble. I want one that is efficient but still manages to give a comfortable spray (if there is such a thing).
-----Sanitize the little plastic scalp massager and the rack I keep my shower things in. I know it hangs in the shower and gets sprayed by water....but I still think this is a good idea every once-in-a-while.
-----See what I can do to remove the rust that has started forming on the edges of Husband's shower caddy-there doesn't appear to be much that can be done. We have hard water and it gets on my nerves.
-----See if I can find a pretty decal (or make one) to put on the door. I had a company that was going to send me a sample but it never arrived and I don't remember who their name to inquire about it.
-----Find more exercises that can be done in the shower-this one helps relieve neck pain. I usually try to do some sort of activity on my way to the shower, too.
  <<<========Intriguing.

12. This girl has been asked not to sing the National Anthem at games unless it is done in a more traditional manner. A video is shown. I think it was a really good rendition....better than pretty much any that I have heard at a sporting event. I feel badly for her.
"Administrators say there were complaints after a game against Martinsville that the anthem was disrespectful, unrecognizable and that it was disrespectful to current and former members of the military."

13. What ingredients have you never cooked with but want to try? I keep a list.
---A large part of the problem for me with trying new ingredients is shipping and handling...I do not live anywhere near a place that is very culinary and that means that hunting all over town for an item usually does no good. I complain about it frequently as it is frustrating to live somewhere that cranberries are only sold at Christmas and things like lamb and veal are pretty much silently outlawed.
---I will actually work grocery shopping into travels. I can only get non-perishables but at least that helps once a year or so when I visit some city that is more into culinary pursuits.We budget for this type of activity by eating from the pantry and then using the budget that would normally have gone to food during that time at the other location. In other words, nothing extra is spent. Works well. :-)

-----Starbucks new "trenta" size could cause one to gain as much as 63 pounds in a year!?
-----Twitter's ad revenue could reach $250 million by 2012! Starbucks is one of the advertisers. One positive thing I can say is that the "sponsored" trending topics are not as intrusive or distracting as other types of advertising.

The last time I remember stopping at a Starbucks was when there was a promotion for free coffee at tax time...I wonder if they are going to do such a promotion this year. I do not drink anything with caffeine in it right now due to some thyroid issues but it would be a fun stop with Husband.

Teen Pregnancy......

It is only 4 months into the school year. Imagine what this number will be by the end of the year!

"Teen Mom" star Amber Portwood and Kim Kardashian are having a disagreement on this issue.
---Do you think that "Teen Mom" should be canceled? I have not watched an episode as I do not have cable...so I have no idea how/if the show can be altered to help decrease the number of teen pregnancies.

The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy.
I do not necessarily endorse all of their suggestions. One thing I disagree with is that those who are 18 and 19 are being counted in the traditional "teen" pregnancy statistics....18 is the age of adulthood and, while it is not advisable for many, some people ARE adult enough to have children/be married at this time.

Lonpos.....

A game called "Lonpos" that can be found on the 90210 Organics site sounds interesting. A three-dimensional puzzle game with many challenges and many solutions. The description does not say what age level this game is advisable to start with.

How many licks it takes to get to a worm?

That is unusual. Sugar-free with a real worm inside.

Lots of starbursts.....

Uses candy:
-----Zesty Popcorn Balls. Uses melted Starbursts. A variation uses M&M's. I don't know if "zesty" would be the right description....sounds more sweet to me. I am not sure if I have ever successfully made popcorn balls (if I ever tried it, I was fairly young). Seems pretty simple. :-)
-----Frosty Fruit Pops
-----Starbursts Jellybean Bites
-----Slightly microwaved Starbursts are supposed to be good. I need to try this at some point.

Does not use candy:
-----Starburst Lemon Squares. Cream cheese is generally a big hit at our house.
-----Star Burst  (drink). I did not know that there is such a thing as strawberry schnapps. Another drink that uses strawberry schnapps is a Strawberry Starburst.
-----Starburst (drink). I had to look up what "Tuaca" is. Tuaca is a 100% natural liqueur with authentic Italian roots, flavored with vanilla and citrus."
-----Starburst (cocktail). This was in the healthy section of Food.com.
-----Starburst Shooter Cocktail
-----Starburst Martini
-----Melon Starburst (drink).
-----Hawaiian Starburst (drink).
-----Tequila Starburst. The recipe uses Espolòn Reposado Tequila. I do not know how to make a kola nut tincture yet...but kola nuts are often one of the sources of caffeine in cola.
-----Banana Pudding Starburst. Yes, it is that "recipe that uses Nilla wafers. Husband cannot have soy and I should avoid it....so, I am eventually going to have to find some sort of substitute for these-they contain soybean oil.
-----The instructions to give the clerk when you want to order a"Pink Starburst".....a "secret menu" item at Jamba Juice.
-----Mexican Starburst Casserole. I am not sure about this one as it uses macaronis. We have not had much luck with enjoying the taste of casseroles that have noodles in them (particularly macaroni).

I am keeping these in mind for Christmas. :-)

-----Willow Smith may play Little Orphan Annie in a re-make.

-----Kelly Preston had a Scientology "Silent Birth." To the women out there: Do you think you could do this?

Calendar.....

Licensed photo...DO NOT COPY.
Title: Maya Calendar
Description: Artifact of Maya Calendar in a sunray

-----2011. Filming will start on a biopic with Sacha Baron Cohen as Freddie Mercury. I just do not see this as being able to be done well. I hope that Mr. Cohen does not do his own vocals....whether he would be good at them or not-it reminds me of La Bamba where many people now think of sounds other than the real Ritchie Valens.

-----2011. Six Flags Amusement Parks 50th Anniversary Celebration. Six Flags Amusement Parks Corporation is the 4th most popular in terms of attendance.
~~~Six Flags (official) blog
-----January 24, 2011. The new season of Kitchen Nightmares starts on Fox.
-----February 2011. OPI launches their "GLEE"-inspired collection. I will have to see them in person...I am a little interested in one of the two green colors (I don't know it's name yet). Apparently, one of the colors is called "Celibacy Club" (not a green color).
-----February 7, 2011. Nickelodeon debuts new Power Rangers series.
-----February 19, 2011. American Cancer Society Cattle Barons' Ball. The theme this year is "Caribbean Cowboy."
-----Through February 27, 2011. Caribbean Garden Exhibit at The New York Botanical Garden. I like the photo (below) that the New York Botanical Garden put up because the ceiling reminds me of a Ferris Wheel.
-----March 5, 2011. Opening date for the 2011 season at Six Flags Fiesta Texas.
-----March 20-27, 2011. World Championships in Ski Orienteering. Tänndalen,Sweden.
-----March 22,2011....the book "A Chicken in Every Yard" comes out. It can be pre-ordered now at UrbanFarmStore.com.
-----May 26-29, 2011. Pheonix Comicon. Leonard Nimoy will be there on Saturday.
-----Summer 2011. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial will open.
-----July 15, 2011. 1st Annual Bloggy Conference by Bloggy Moms. At Great Wolf Lodge in Mason, Ohio.
-----MasterChef (USA) has been renewed for a second season. I do not think it has been announced when the new season will start.
In My Life....
-----Well...the snow finally let up and the car was able to be shoveled out. I was able to keep a medical appointment.
-----Father-in-Law brought us the boxes I wanted. We are re-arranging the living room and some of my books needed to be put away for now....I did not want to just pile them in the closet.
-----The lab order for my next thyroid test arrived in the mail today. This is something I like about my endocrinologist....I do not have to make an appointment just to have blood drawn. I can walk-in to one of several local labs and get it taken care of within the time frame needed but also when I can go.
-----I found out that Cornerstone Festival will be having a program where college/Master's degree  credit can be earned by attending the fest/seminars. This credit will then be eligible to transfer to a seminary. I hope that this program is successful.
-----Rep. Gabrielle Giffords stood with assistance today!!!
Thursday Thirteen....
1. Best places to raise children-2010 list.
---Tuscon was voted the best place to raise children in the state of Arizona (I took note of this as I immediately thought of the recent shootings).
-----Tinley Park was the top choice for Illinois. I am fond of this city because some great concerts come there.
2. Lowfares.com is having a Valentine's  Day Giveaway. To enter, you have to make up a version of the traditional "Roses are Red, Violets are Blue" poem. :-)
3.
Savannah Bee Company Beeswax Hand Cream
4. How to salvage crystallized honey. An easy thing to do.
5. I would have to agree that the Bond Bug is an ugly car.
6. Piers Morgan announces who he has banned  from his show.
7.
-----"49 Things a Man Should Never Do After the Age of 30."
-----There are still people in San Francisco trying to get circumcision made illegal.
8.
-----Expensive things you shouldn't buy.  Mainly things that it mathematically makes more sense to rent.
-----The $84 Dollar Stir-fry.  Makes me glad that we have a lot of the basic cooking supplies.
9. Something I did not remember....."Why Suicide Bombers Shave Their Bodies."
10. SMOKING/SMOKE:
-----Smoking begins damaging DNA within minutes.
-----Someone said that smoking gives off radiation. I do not know if this is true.
-----Finding and correcting the heating leaks in your home. One thing that I would be careful about is using incense to find the leaks....scientists have documented evidence that incense causes lung damage.
-----French smoker creates (lots of) commotion on plane. I think this should have read as "French man drinking alcohol." I don't know what will happen to him...commotion on planes is often not taken lightly. I hope that he is educated of the danger of causing uproar on a plane (though he likely had no intent of violence behind that inspired by the alcohol....others who intend some malice can see this as their opportunity to act). If this is the first incident this gentleman has of anything close to this nature, I would hope that he is just given some sort of education/rehab....instead of doing jail time.
11. Beef chili. Classic flavor...but lower fat and calories.
12. How people exercise in countries around the world.
13.
The first chapter can be read for FREE by downloading Kindle for PC (also FREE). I think that this classic child development book is still very accurate about the flaws in the educational system.
PARTICIPATE IN THURSDAY THIRTEEN. :-)
In My Life....
-----It is snowing....badly. Husband was supposed to go get boxes so I can pack books away. I am not sure if Husband can run any errands today. It looks like several, if not all, cars in our neighborhood will have to be dug out.
-----Some mornings waiting the half-hour to hour that I must wait to eat after taking my thyroid medicine can be excruciating....I feel so hungry. I am lucky as some doctors advise even longer of a wait after taking the medicine. Once I can eat, I still cannot have any calcium or iron for 4 hours. The calcium part is easy but most things have some amount of iron in them. So that I am able to eat something substantial before the 4 hours is up, one of my doctors has advised me to just make sure to choose things with a very small amount of iron. Here in America we feel it is necessary to enrich things with iron...plus, most fruits/vegetables naturally have it....and most things that don't have iron do have calcium. As you may have guessed, reading food labels is currently a big part of my life! Groan.
-----The good news about my thyroid is that my numbers are either at an all time low or the next lowest they have ever been! This is great news, considering that, at the end of 2010, it was discovered that I have an anti-thyroid anti-body (my thyroid is in the process of failing). I want to put off the demise of my thyroid for as long as possible. I have read in some places that my thyroid may not get to the point of not functioning, despite the anti-body, but I am not at all sure if this is true.
-----Lowfares.com is having a Valentine's Day Giveaway. To enter, you have to make up a version of the traditional "Roses are red, violets are blue" poem. :-) I would enter if I felt inspired to come up with a cute poem and wasn't anti-TSA-patdown-and-radiation-exposure.
-----Reading a sample chapter of George W. Bush's book "Decision Points"  this morning. This portion of the book is about the troop surge and the financial crisis.
-----2011. Filming will start on a biopic with Sacha Baron Cohen as Freddie Mercury. I just do not see this as being able to be done well. I hope that Mr. Cohen does not do his own vocals....whether he would be good at them or not-it reminds me of La Bamba where many people now think of sounds other than the real Ritchie Valens.
-----2011. Six Flags Amusement Parks 50th Anniversary Celebration. Six Flags Amusement Parks Corporation is the 4th most popular in terms of attendance.
~~~Six Flags (official) blog

-----January 24, 2011. The new season of Kitchen Nightmares starts on Fox.
-----February 2011. OPI launches their "GLEE"-inspired collection. I will have to see them in person...I am a little interested in one of the two green colors (I don't know it's name yet). Apparently, one of the colors is called "Celibacy Club" (not a green color).
-----February 7, 2011. Nickelodeon debuts new Power Rangers series.

-----Through February 27, 2011. Caribbean Garden Exhibit at The New York Botanical Garden. I like the photo (below) that the New York Botanical Garden put up because the ceiling reminds me of a Ferris Wheel.

-----March 20-27, 2011. World Championships in Ski Orienteering. Tänndalen,Sweden.

Thanks to @LORI_SF for finding this. :-)

-----One of the things on Facebook that upsets me....when people are married and one spouse (usually a supreme jerk in most aspects of life) decides that they are "it's complicated" or "single." Some people don't even tell their spouses of this "status."

Oldest African-American dies at 113.  Her parents may have been born in slavery.
_______________

The oldest African-American is now Mamie Rearden (who is 112). Her friend, who was 91 or 92 at the time of this interview, has since passed away.

-----Ferret chews off 7 fingers of sleeping 4-month-old.
-----School lunches could have a lot less (or no) french fries soon.

Saturday 9.....

1. What's the nicest thing a complete stranger ever did for you?
The first thing that I thought of was a visit to a Christian book store where I really admired a Christmas ornament. It cost $15 dollars and that was more than I should spend. This lady said she felt that God wanted her to buy it for me...and did so. That ornament is on a display hook in my house and I see it every day. It says "Seek Him, Adore Him, Praise Him, Thank Him" and has scenes from the Nativity and the crosses at the Crucifixion.

2. What one thing always speaks deeply to you, to your spirit, no matter your mood or what else is going on in your life?

---I am lucky to have my Husband in my life...not everyone has such a happy relationship. Even when we bicker about something, neither of us ever stay angry at each other for long (also something not everyone has).
---Music that I like almost always makes me smile. It used to be ALWAYS but that does not work anymore. I love to dance.
---Especially if troubled, I like to read my study Bible...which is very close to falling completely apart.
---Petting Doggie can be so calming and comforting.
---Sitting wrapped in a blanket or throw.
---Time on the porch.
Obviously, my answer was more than one thing. :-)

3. How many jobs have you held in your life? How many of those were part of your chosen career field?
14....sometimes more than one at the same time. 4 were part of my chosen career field.

4. Of those jobs, how many did you leave voluntarily?
All but one and that was not my fault.

5. How did you discover Saturday 9? How long have you played? (Thank you for joining in!)
I was looking for memes. I am not sure when I discovered Saturday 9....not that long ago.

6. What's the worst beverage you've ever tasted?
I don't really have an answer for this- I haven't tasted many beverages that were unappetizing. Oh wait, I thought of one...Budweiser Chelada (Budweiser and clamato).

7. Is there anything in life you are "certain" about? Firm in your beliefs? Strong in your convictions?
I want to be a good Christian and a good person. Being determined is important. There is almost always a way to achieve a goal.

8. How did you come up with the title of your blog's posts?
My inspiration is varied. Many of my posts don't have a title.

9. Would you consider yourself a good cook?

I would say my level of cooking is intermediate. I am very good at some things. I am always trying to improve my cooking skills. I love trying new dishes.

Participate in Saturday 9. :-)

Seeking good nacho recipes.

I have been looking through nacho recipes today. Part of my purpose in this is to convert Husband to the idea that nachos can actually be a dinner.

-----Irish Nachos. Includes waffle fries, corned beef and beer. A Rachael Ray recipe.
-----Greek-Style Nachos

-----One-Step, Spicy-As-You-Like Pumpkin Enchilada Sauce

A simple recipe from Ocean Mist Farms.

-----Pilot delays take-off for dying two-year-old's grandfather.  Of course, this was Southwest airlines (always unconventional). What a great thing to do.

Copycat Recipes

-----Girl Scout Cookies....what you are eating. Also includes some copycat recipes.

-----CopyKat Recipes.....Arby's Sauce.
-----Discussion of how people think Arby's roast beef is made.

-----President Obama was very emotionally affected by the death of 9-year-old Christina-Taylor Greene.
I feel badly for the neighbor that she was with. :-(
-----Scotch eggs with less mess. The author did some experimenting with the ingredients. As for how little mess?...clean-up time was two minutes.
