Description: Artifact of Maya Calendar in a sunray

-----NOW: Canada. Coupon to buy a Crush 2-Liter Soda and Get 1 Free. Expires September 30th.
-----NOW: San Diego Zoo's "Elephant Odyssey" exhibit has opened. I don't think I have ever seen a zoo that has that many elephants.
-----June 25: National Catfish Day. Thank you, to @realmustache for telling me about this.
-----July 3-5: Freedom Fiesta. 42nd annual. Seguin,Texas. It has a jalapeno-eating contest.
-----July 4-August 4: World E-book Fair. I attend each year. Thousands of e-books can be browsed and downloaded for FREE.
-----July 14: Obama will toss out first pitch at the All-Star Game.
-----July 29-August 2: Maine Lobster Festival. I was just reading a review of this event (and whether one should partake) written by the late David Foster Wallace. It is the 62nd Annual celebration.
-----August 15-16: Texas Testosterone Festival. I think it would make for some unique photographic opportunities.
-----August 30: The Virgin Mobile Festival will be FREE to many this year. It will feature Weezer and Blink 182. I wish that I could go because I would love to see Weezer perform "Pork & Beans."
-----September 20,2009-January 3,2010: The Artistic Furniture of Charles Rohlfs. Dallas Museum of Art exhibit.I am wondering about the framework under the piece shown...was this to store something on or purely decorative? Beautiful carving.
-----2011. Six Flags Amusement Parks 50th Anniversary Celebration. I plan to go to at least part of it. In less fun news, Six Flags had to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection this week.
-----Sometime: There is to be a biographical film about Sam Kinison. It will air on HBO. I wonder if they could get the actual celebrities for the "Wild Thing" video. I also hope that some of Sam's sermons from when he was a pastor are included.
-----Sometime: I am hoping that Iron Butterfly answers my e-mailed suggestion that they somehow digitalize Elvis singing In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida. Elvis would have been excellent at singing this song. :-) It would be neat to see. :-) Husband does a pretty good imitation of what this would be like....I ask him to do it for me all the time.

What's happening in your life (and on your blog)??? :-)
What else should I add to this list?
-----Expect to see more product placement in movies. The amount of money to be spent on this is astounding.
-----Botox may cure baldness?
I have blogged this before...but I really enjoyed the performance. I am a FAO Schwartz fan.

Contests

-----You could possibly have your idea used in a Mustang commercial...and get a free trip.
-----Win a Dell Notebook Mini 10. Sponsored by Kid Rex (Search Engine that is for kids, by kids).
-----Win a Manta Front-Of-The-Line Pass. Many will win on this one. The Manta is Sea World's newest rollercoaster.

Oprah, Mobile Ads and House Samaritans

-----Good for her. Oprah treated staffers to a cruise.
-----Have you seen more car advertisements on your mobile phone's Internet recently? I am getting a Blackberry next month and will see if I notice this. I have basic Internet on my phone right now....and have not noticed ANY car ads.
-----I am glad that everyday people are trying to help others avoid foreclosure.

Mummy, Cars and Mommy

-----Mummy Turns Out to be Daddy. I liked the title and the article was very interesting. I do not know if that is true about diet causing the teeth to be so white (mentioned in comments).
-----Which car do you think is deserving of the European Car of the Year Award? There were a lot of cars made by Toyota nominated.

-----John & Kate Plus 8 episodes will include John's new girlfriend????
Update: OK....it is being said that this won't happen (according to PerezHilton.com)

Economic Signs

-----The sale of U.S. durable goods has risen. This is contrary to the dire predictions of analysts. This good news did not affect the automobile industry...maybe it will eventually.
-----I just started a list of positive economic signs that I will keep in the sidebar of this blog. :-)
-----Auto manufacturers increase mobile advertising. It occurs to me that a good place to get people to think about buying a new car is in the car they are dissatisfied with.

Disappearing Cars, Watching Oprah and Economic Woe

-----The most popular cars to steal
-----Does watching Oprah really put our health at risk?
-----One couples' story after losing (2) jobs at Ford. Not so much Ford's fault as the Child Support enforcers. I hope this gets completely fixed soon.

-----The analogy to the ghost of Henry Ford made me smile.

RIP, Ed.

Ed McMahon has passed away. I noticed that one of the top searches on Google was "Johnny Carson"....and not "Ed McMahon."

-----I hope that this Ed McMahon autograph is real and whoever gets it is happy.

Things I've Never Heard Before....

-----There is sunscreen made especially for babies. Neutrogena makes one.
-----The economy may cause a shortage of rental cars...so, book early for your summer trips.
-----The Toyota Prius is in its 3rd generation. Very stream-lined dashboard. I like the current animated commercial that they have.
-----Obama will toss out the first pitch at the All-Star Game.
-----Auntie's Beads has a Beader's Advantage Club. You can take 10% off every order for an entire year. From my figures, if you are a beader who buys more than $300.00 of beads in a year, this could be very advantageous.
-----The candidates for the European Car of the Year Award. I have never heard of some of these cars. The Ford Ka makes me smile....because it sounds like an Easterner here saying "Ford Car."
-----Found out that the Ford "Ka" is actually meant to sound sort of like how some pronounce the word "car"....though not from the Eastern United States prospective that it made me think of. :-)
-----Is the economy this bad? A tourism article brought up the fact that we might start driving 30 and 40-year-old cars (like they do in Cuba). It is also being said that now is the best time to buy a new car?

Certainly not a baseball game.

The video is pretty far from the baseball scene. :-) Some will get my reference....ask if you don't.

I love Adam Ant....and the Muse song. I played this mix at a party recently and people did not really understand it. I had another mix like it after ("Flash" by Queen -Hollywood Records remix). Those listening thought that multiple songs were playing and that something was wrong with my computer (hooked Creative surround sound to Dell XPS). I was surprised no one had heard mixes like this and hope they explore.

Check out Muse Official YouTube channel. I enjoyed that there is music going a few years back.

In My Life....

-----Trying out software called Image Converter Plus. It is for large batches of photos and graphics. The press release I read says that it has been used by NASA and the Ford Corporation.
-----Doggie has almost completely learned "play dead." Now doing it randomly when really wants something....funny to see if you know why is doing it (just suddenly lies down on ground and after a bit holds up a paw to try to encourage the expected treat). Doggie thinks randomly doing a trick or doing a trick of own choosing (not the one was told) gets instant treat. Stubborn/smart.
-----We got a dollhouse for 6 dollars at a thrift store. It is beautiful but needs a lot of work. I will have to show photos here on my blog. Though it does not look completely like the house in "The Crow," I want to pattern it a little bit after Eric Draven's apartment on the exterior.
-----I passed out a couple of Akoha cards. I am not sure if people have "Played Forward" the Random Acts of Kindness yet.
-----Husband and I went to a Ben Franklin store and picked up the findings that he needs to make some jewelry pieces out of our pretty beads. I really want to see what he does with the carnelian and azurite/malachite.

The 100+ Challenge....

The goal is to read 100 books by the end of the year. I am pretty sure that I can do that. I have 10 choices so far.

1. "Netherland" by Joseph O'Neill...a book that Barack O'Bama has read
2. "Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln" by Dorris Kearns Goodwin...if I remember correctly O'bama said that he modeled his cabinet after this
3. "Little Big Man" by Thomas Berger
4. "Baking Boot Camp: Five Days of Training at the Culinary Institute of America" by Darra Goldstein. I am not good at baking beyond adding a few things to a mix or following a recipe. I want to know how to churn out totally handmade cookies and pound totally handmade dough (that last part I haven't done for years). I want to make my own pie crust....something I have not done beyond the most simple crusts.
5. "The Professional Chef" by the Culinary Institute of America
6. "The New Professional Chef" by the Culinary Institute of America. Hopefully, there are a lot of additions to the second issue of this book.
7. "Infinite Jest" by David Foster Wallace. Many consider this to be a tome or a "chunkster" but I have read the unedited version of "The Stand"...so, I am not intimidated. :-)
8. "The Collected Stories of Arthur C. Clarke." Again, not intimidated by the size of the book.
9. "The Great American Staycation" by Matt Wixon
10. "Immodest Proposals : The Complete Science Fiction of William Tenn. Vol. 1"

JOIN THE 100+ READING CHALLENGE

I love a good challenge.

As I have mentioned before, I am a voracious reader this summer. I am at the library at least twice a week, add to my library waiting list daily, and renewing often. I am a participant in Infinite Summer (in which we read Infinite Jest). Of course, I will attend the World E-Book Fair as I do every year. As I said....a voracious reader.

Now I have joined the Book Awards Challenge. The idea is to read 5 books from 5 different awards (like the Pulitzer, the Agatha, etc.) I have just decided to join so I haven't picked my books yet. I know one of my choices will likely be a collection of short stories by Stephen King (including one about a porta-potty prison) but I do not know beyond that. Stay tuned.

"With a Mind to Rhyme and Two Hype Feet"

Imagine shopping for jeans and having this happen. I wonder how long it took for them to get this routine down. The older gentleman in a business suit w/a tie around his head really did a good job and made me smile. :-) Thanks to Matt Merk for this find.

As for M.C. Hammer himself, he is currently doing a reality TV show about his family and his attempts to relaunch his career (not that he had stopped preforming...but now he is stepping that up again).

Thought I Have Never Thought Before....

I am wondering if there will one day be menstrual blood drives to collect the stem cells. Sounds yucky.....but, when mixed with umbilical cord blood, might save a lot of lives. From what I have read, India is actually getting their first menstrual blood bank. Collection is not messy/unsanitary like it sounds....so I suppose a drive would just consist of dropping off what is collected (in a silicon cup that is much like what some ultra-environmentally-conscious people use instead of a tampon/pad).

Things I've Never Heard Before....

-----California snails. I would find them just as fascinating as Meg did. :-)
-----Shadow Shot Sunday. A blogging activity that I did not know about. I think this will enable me to slow down and see more of the beauty in my backyard....I love spending time in the yard.
-----Greek Cinnamon Stewed Chicken. A recipe on the Oprah site.
-----Moourl...a URL-shortener. I agree with @befjam that it is cute. I don't like that it takes up a lot more space than other URL-shorteners (not always good if you are on Twitter). @moourl is now on Twitterer....so users can get updates on what is going on with their service.
-----Apples of Gold Jewelry has a sale going. There is a coupon code at the top of the page for $25 off all jewelry and it lasts until June 30th. I like a lot of the gemstone pendants.
-----KFC recipe for "Puffy Meat Patties." We are thinking of having these tonight. A simple recipe. If they work out well, we can serve them to our summer guests.
-----Foods that boost your mood. I didn't know that eating a burrito could make me feel better.

Strategy, tactics and food trapped on a plane

-----The difference between strategy and tactics
-----Why airlines should make sure that their packages are openable. Millie makes a lot of videos about things she can't open. I had the worst problem opening a pickle relish jar recently.

Jalapenos,biscuits and teeth

-----How well would you do on a jalapeno-eating contest? They have one at the Freedom Fiesta in Seguin, Texas.
-----Biscuits that are somewhat like the cheesy garlic biscuits served at Red Lobster. I really, really like their biscuits.
-----Wow...dental sculpture. I would definitely pause if I walked by that on the beach.

Not Forgotten

I am glad to see that six months later people are still thinking of Laura Garza.

Things I've Never Heard Before....

-----Libertia. Not a flower that grows in the United States. I wonder if I could manage to grow it in a greenhouse. If it can grow in California, will it eventually be grown in other parts of the country. Libertia is a part of the Iris family. I could not find if they are invasive in California (like some naturalized plants are). Iris do tend to spread (but not too fast). Adding this to the list of plants that I probably-definitely-want.
-----Sparta Butterfest. I learned about this from Shannon. Butterfest is the 11-14th of June this year.
-----China will have a sex-themed amusement park.
-----Disney lets Google map Disneyland Paris...the first amusement park to do so.

In My Life....

-----Summer guests....apx. a week away. I will not stress out...any more than I already have.
-----I am going to put on nail polish later. I haven't done that in a while. I am a big fan of nail polish. I especially want to try scented nail polishes....I have heard about them but not seen them. One of my goals for this year was actually to wear more nail polish....Husband was amused by this.
-----Our garden is doing well. I need to weed....lots of tiny weeds. Also, something that I am hoping is not poison ivy.
-----I have a new jewelry box. The other did not have enough room for pins, chains and bracelets....so, I was creating jumbled piles and was only able to find rings easily. This has stacked drawers and a music box. I love thrift shops.
-----Going to start a regular blog post about Oprah recommendations. I am fascinated by pop culture and frugality. I will try to follow Oprah's recommendations (or suggest ways that they can be followed as inexpensively as possible). The title for my posts will be "Cheap-Rah."

Asbestos....I don't know why it reminds me of Kryptonite.

I believe that I have been around asbestos (not for long amounts of time). That worries me sometimes. Asbestos is linked to a dangerous lung cancer called Mesothelioma. I have read that casual expose is not a problem or that it takes 3 months or longer to be a risk...I have also read that any exposure is a risk.

While I doubt I will get Mesothelioma, there are many people who do. What a shame for them....and their families. It is something that can be a workplace hazard....for construction, auto mechanics and demolition people (among others).
-----Tragically, a lot of WWII vets/workers were exposed to asbestos aboard ships or while building ships.

I have decided that I need to get more educated on this. For instance, I believe that I was once standing by a bunch of it....no, I am not kidding (the place was irresponsible like that). I am pretty sure that I have seen it wrapped around many pipes...but this had just fallen off a pipe and was lying there. I am sure that it has been removed by now (years later)....but it just floored me at the time. At least if it had asbestos it was the least dangerous kind (white vs. blue or brown). Welcome to the care that is our education system (there I said it....what shocked me most was at a school...and I was likely around it at more than one school).

What gets me about it all is that places still carelessly expose people to asbestos. Finding out that you got cancer can occur as much as 20 to 50 years later...then how do you figure out that where the exposure occured?
-----Think about the maintenance workers at large schools....where there are/were lots of wrapping around the pipes of various buildings. Those maintenance works spend a lot of time in the bowels of the buildings. If they were to get this, or other asbestos-related conditions, the disease could start manifesting around the time they were getting ready to retire. I seem to remember reading that some mines also had a lot of asbestos...again one would work all ones life and get this illness around retirement age or that forced them to stop working.

I looked up the symptoms and there are so many....including chest pain, fluid in lungs and tumors. My Mother has Stage 4 Breast Cancer....and it sounds a lot like this. I can't understand why anyone would knowingly subject others to a CANCER RISK (and a fatal one at that). I have read that some of these companies knew what the risk was (just like some tobacco companies). Then there are those, like the schools that I suspect of this, that just don't/didn't want to spend money to have it removed. This is tragic....it makes me sad and angry.
_____________________

People diagnosed with mesothelioma are often entitled to receive financial compensation . There are attorneys who specialize in mesotheliooma. Since a lot of the asbestos manufacturers have gone bankcrupt, an attorney can often be crucial.

In My Life....

-----Reading voraciously. I am participating in Infinite Summer...in which I read Infinite Jest this summer. I am also joining a Summer Reading program at a library (hope the prizes aren't disappointing).

-----I discovered that I just don't have strong enough teeth for eating ribs. Maybe I need to find different methods for cooking less-tough ribs. I do not cook ribs....but I could contribute ideas to the various menfolk who do (Husband and friends). I wonder if I could make the menfolk wear my Elvis BBQ apron that I am assembling. We could all wear Elvis aprons. :-)
Perhaps I could wear an Elvis apron, a special facial mask and gloves....since I usually end up wearing the BBQ sauce. :-)

-----I am going to re-watch "Young Einstein." I would like to watch some of Yahoo Serious' other movies...."Mr. Accident" in particular.
-----I have added "Mr. Accident" to my waiting list at the library. It is about a men who works in an egg factory. His life is going really well....until the boss gets an idea (adding nicotine to the eggs).

Outfitting TheOneWhoIsExpectingABundleOfJoy.

Looking at maternity clothes as a gift to one of my in-laws. Noticing that there is actually a "transitional" category of clothing for after pregnancy- I had never heard of this before.

Hmmm....what would TheOneWhoIsExpectingABundleOfJoy like to wear?? She likes the trendy clothes and is amazingly economical (coupons every day from what I can tell). Kiki's Fashions seems like it would have a lot for TheOneWhoIsExpectingABundleOfJoy ( I give characters on my blog nicknames....in case you haven't noticed).

I am currently going with this pink and black dress...modest and fun at same time. Very reasonably priced. It comes in yellow and black, too. If I should ever be lucky enough to find myself with child, I would wear either of these (with a blazer or bolero....because that is my style).

Kiki's Fashions Maternity Clothes

P.S. If you are expecting, or gifting someone who is, I am all about the coupon codes for savings while shopping. I have a coupon code from Kiki's. Use the coupon code "blogfriends" during checkout to get 20% off....because you are my blogfriends. Enjoy.

The Grumpy One needs flowers.

This post may or may not apply to you. The person who it truly applies to TRULY knows who they are....because I am being blatantly obvious and reading it to them after I type it. Grumpy people should have lots of flowers.

-----Perhaps the flowers should have fifty of those smiley face picks that you often see in floral arrangements.
-----Maybe I could have them shipped to me. Then hand-deliver them myself....dressed as Grumpy the Dwarf or Grumpy Smurf.
-----1-800-FLOWERS has same day delivery. I think I could tolerate less than 24 hours more of Grumpy. It would especially help if I print out a picture of whatever flowers I choose to help you smile....and clutch that picture tightly until the delivery arrives.

-----Pink and dark pink roses are said to signify appreciation. I shall send the dark pink...to signify that I appreciate your cheer. The dark part will signify the grumpiness that will eventually rub off on me....visualizing singing Pooh's "Little Black Rain Cloud" everywhere I go. I wonder if you would find it embarrassing if I wore a tutu and sang "Little Black Rain Cloud" every time I was in your presence. Either I practice my Pooh dance or consider buying something from the Rose Sale on the 1-800-FLOWERS site that I have been looking at.
***I like the "Fields of Ecuador" arrangement listed under "I'm Sorry" because it is a beautiful dark pink. I will show it to whom this post may concern. Said Grumpy Person might smile just seeing the picture....and knowing that I am sorry that there is uproar in their world.

-----Flowers beat hurling Oscar-the-Grouch-shaped beanbags at the Grumpy One....because I would have a hard time figuring out where to get Oscar-the-Grouch-shaped beanbags.

Perhaps this post did not make The Grumpy smile. Perhaps his/her smile is there....and we will see it when the Grump washes away. Carry on.

Some of the flower arrangements that I have done.

Randomness Meme :-)

I chose this stock photo because pieces fall together randomly but fit together perfectly.
When one uses Twitter well, the same thing happens.
What beautiful randomness.

Our mission this week was to share our favorite quotes.

Since I am on Twitter so much, I decided to share some of the gems that made me smile/think. These quotes are from what I have marked as "Favorites."

Things I've Never Heard Before....

-----Japanese plant factories.
-----There will be a lot of BlogHer Meet-ups this month.
-----There is a protest of electronic cigarettes. E-cigarettes aren't sold here in the States.

I will blog about Peace more.

___________

-----There was another suicide at Gitmo.
-----New Zealand is now said to be the "world's most peaceful country."
-----On compassion

MISC.

-----A very neat treasure hunt will take place soon on Twitter. I hope that the winner/recipient of this prize is very happy.
-----I have not decided what I think of this unusual eye makeup. I am not sure if I totally understand how one goes about the false eyelash part. This would make a nice addition to a Cleopatra costume.
-----The "Octomom" show will likely not air in the United States. Imagine the public uproar if it did. I have seen so many people have STRONG opinions on this issue.

In My Life....

Licensed Photo. Taken by Tijmen van Dobbenburgh
On a personal note: Of course I, Thebluestbutterfly, would choose a blue bottle of nail polish to illustrate this post. :-)

-----Yesterday, I witnessed a mother trying to teach her little girl to say "I am a Diva." I hope she does that sometime where a person reacts quickly and goes up to the Mom and starts teaching her to say "I am pretentious." I hope that illuminating moment happens before the child understands "I am a Diva." I have no problems with people who think their children should have healthy self-esteem...just with those that think their bankbooks and ego rule the world. I am in Angry-Blogger mode right now.....scowl.
-----I am happy that I will not be missing "Infinite Summer." Reading of Infinite Jest will start later in the month. I am waiting for the book at the library. I started reading this book before but did not get to finish it. A book-clubbish activity will be a fun way to read.
-----I learned a lot about craft beers from this article about how "brewing is the new wine." I have never had beer with chocolate....but will make a point to try it.
-----Wondering what people think of the jellyfish crop circle. Artwork? Artwork creating by aliens? The product of the wind blowing in the shape of a jellyfish one day when God was bored?
-----I found Nylon Magazine. I am pleased with this as they have lots of coverage of nail polish in their beauty section. I love discovering pretty/new nail polish. I like the idea of the soy-based nail polish that they mentioned...but don't really like the price (especially of the remover). The price of the soy-based nail polish is higher than that of OPI.
-----Yet another sign that my pocketbook isn't what it used to be. I was looking through some of my old posts in which I mentioned frequent trips to various Oriental Buffets (at $11.99 per person). I realized today that though this is one of my fave restaurant treats, I haven't done this for about a year. I used to be able to afford two restaurant outings a month. I miss the frog legs. I really miss the frog legs.
-----I would be intimidated by making nettle beer. I am also leery of trying it. I know that many people eat things with nettles in them....it just seems a bit unsafe to me. I worry that I would have some reaction to it.

Things I've Never Heard Before....

-----I was reading a wine review by a fellow blogger and I noticed that tasting a slight soapiness was mentioned. Have you ever had this happen?
-----Someone got arrested at an airport for having suitcases made out of cocaine.
-----I've never heard that drinking coffee is a risk for those with diabetes and I guess it isn't.
-----I knew about Faith, the dog that learned to walk upright...but I did not know that she often visits The Troops.
-----There is scented nail polish.

More than a photograph....

-----I know I like the idea of being able to make a photograph into a painting. We are talking an actual painter doing the artwork....not a machine.

-----Women in Military Service for America Memorial I realized something strange today-counting both sides of my family,I can only think of two women total that have been in the military.

The beads have arrived.

Carnelian

Azurite/Malachite

Zebra Onyx

Amethyst

These are from Auntie's Beads. Best photos I could take given lighting conditions. Husband is using them for some sort of project....stay tuned for more pictures. Of course, one picture had to be the backside of a Live-Long-and-Prosper-Type-Pose (I really want to see the new Star Trek movie soon). :-)
-----The last remaining Titanic survivor has passed away.

-----On compassion.
-----I am curious to ask of readers.....who was it that taught you about compassion? I am going to Twitter this question, too.
