Cooking with Gordon.....

-----Here is the shopping list for the 3 courses prepared on this show. My first impression is that this is a lot of ingredients.
-----I thought that we would cook the Steak Diane at in-laws house....as we have a hood on our stove. Turns out the in-laws have a hood on their stove, too....and are not at ease with fire. Planning to make the Steak Diane at our house in a few weeks.
------Husband wants to watch the video of Gordon cooking the steak....I am a klutz due to my eye problems and am prohibited from fire. I am also now prohibited from piles of glass jars...I broke a bottle of bread and butter pickles at the store the other day (despited REPEATED cautions that I wasn't being careful enough). Welcome to the intersection of exotropia and brain fog (Hashimoto's/hypothyroid)....this is my life and we adjust. :-) I really would like to experience doing the flambé myself though. :-(
-----Cedric sure did seem to have a pile of pepper there.
-----Of course, the stores that we shop at do not have mascarpone (and MANY other common ingredients for someone who actually cooks). I also noticed that there are not many mascarpone options available on Amazon. @dbirks agreed with me that a lot of stores don't carry mascarpone and advised me that cream cheese can be substituted (though it is not as rich).

I knew that olive oil had healing effects....but not to this extent. In regards to Gordon's recipes, I am glad that we just bought a new bottle of olive oil. Our recent olive oil purchase was our largest bottle yet. We were shopping at a Hy-Vee this week....for which I was very happy as I refuse to buy olive oil at Walmart (they charge a LOT for olive oil).

Adding to the Never Cooked With List....

Licensed Photo. "Farmhouse Fireplace" Taken by Roger Kirby.

A list of things that I have never cooked with (but intend to try).

I have never cooked with:
-----Almond milk (reportedly Michael Jackson had it with granola for breakfast)
-----Arrowroot powder
-----Barley Malt Syrup. The best way to use it is along with other natural sweeteners...I do not know what sweeteners I will use it with yet.
-----Bay scallops...or any scallops. Some of the people on Hell's Kitchen make cooking scallops seem like rocket science.
-----Bean sprouts. I have eaten them. Ham and Bean Sprout Salad sounds interesting.
-----Black sesame seeds. I have seen these mentioned many times and I am really eager to try them.
-----Cashew butter
-----Chipotle Tabasco
-----Curry Powder
-----Dark sesame oil. Sesame oil itself was on the list but I am now working my way through a bottle. :-) I have read that some people keep sesame oil in the fridge....this is what I am trying. Sesame oil can go rancid quickly.
-----Dry mustard
-----Enoki mushrooms.Mild.Crunch. Used for soups and stir fries.
-----Farro
-----Fennel
-----Fleur de Sel (maybe I have had this....haven't paid attention to sea salt labels)
-----Fried squash blossoms
-----Frozen ramen
-----Garlic Tabasco
-----Ground Szechuan peppercorns
-----Halloumi Cheese
-----Haricot Vert. French green beans. We will eventually be growing Haricot Vert.
-----Harissa....how to make Harissa Grilled Halibut with Grilled Red Pepper Harissa
-----Hoisin sauce. My first recipe candidate for cooking with hoison sauce is Salmon Summer Rolls with Dipping Sauce.....that way I get to learn to use the rice paper for rolling, too. I am also interested in this Beef and Green Bean Stir-fry ( I sometimes break my soy taboo and use soy sauce).
-----Hotel Bar butter. Part of New York cuisine for over a century.
-----Japanese soy sauce. There is a difference between Japanese soy sauce and the stuff we get in The States.
-----Katsoubushi (dried bonito flakes). Bonito flakes are bits of dried bonito fish and they look like wood shavings. They are perfectly edible by humans....but in the United States some companies sell them as cat treats (I do not want to eat the cat treats). Bonito is a type of tuna.
-----Kelp.Supposed to increase thyroid function...and I have thyroid problems. There are some kelp items I will be trying in addition to any recipes.
-----Kombu
-----Leeks. I will be making Julia Child's Potage Parmentier (Potato and Leek Soup). Apparently, you can add green beans to Potage Parmentier....I will likely not like that as I DETEST POTATO SOUP WITH GREEN BEANS IN IT.
-----Mache
-----Maltitol Syrup. A sugar-free corn syrup substitute. 90% as sweet as sugar with about half the calories.
-----Mirin. A co-worker was surprised that I know what it is.
-----Monkfish
-----Muscovado Sugar
-----Napa cabbage
-----Nori. I tried my first Nori independent of California Rolls rolls this week. It looked like a papery-green-jerky strip and reminded me of fish skin. I liked it.
-----Peanut oil
-----Pickled ginger. I have eaten it...just never cooked with it myself.
-----Pine Nuts (never tasted one)
-----Pomegranate Molasses.
-----Powdered peanut butter. It has a lot of possible uses...sprinkled as a flavoring on or in a lot of things. I want to use it in a stir fry...perhaps Kung Pao Chicken.
-----Roasted peanut oil
-----Salsify  Rich and Creamy Salsify Gratin
-----Sansho pepper (Japanese pepper seedpods)
-----Seitan
-----Sesame Seeds
-----Sherry Wine Vinegar
-----Shimeji mushrooms. Have to be cooked....otherwise are bitter.
-----Shungiku
-----Soba Noodles. I have had them...but have not cooked them myself.
-----Sorrel
-----Squid. I love to eat it.....but NOT pickled. Ditto for octopus on not having cooked and the same eating preferences as the squid.
-----Star Anise. Perhaps I will make the Haitian recipe Akasan.
-----Sweet Bean Paste
-----Tahini. Tomato Salad with Tahini Sauce....talks about eating it during Ramadan (I am assuming during the non-fasting hours).
-----Tamarind paste
-----Tarragon Wine Vinegar
-----Tobanjan (Chinese chili paste)
-----Wakame. If I figured a way to grow it, I would be careful since Wakame is invasive.
-----Wood ear mushrooms. My first cooking with Wood Ear Mushrooms will likely be Chicken and Wood Ear Mushroom Soup. The Chicken and Wood Ear Mushroom Soup uses peanut oil (which I have not cooked with yet).
-----Yellow Crookneck Squash

After consideration, I took off all the soy items....miso and so on. I am not supposed to have them due to my thyroid problems and think that I can't truly enjoy never being able to taste a dish I cook. I want to be able to try more than a few bites of a dish....so I can make my own judgement as to whether it turned out well.

Thursday Thirteen....

1. World's 50 Best Restaurants List was just released.

2. Boar's Head Festival I have never been to such. There are still places in the United States where this is celebrated.
-----Roasted Leg of Wild Boar
-----Pappardelle with Boar Ragu I am not sure where to get boar shoulder.

3. 65 Red Roses.  A blog that one brave (and vibrant) girl kept as she slowly died of cystic fibrosis. Beautiful, sad and inspiring.

4. I want to cook with salsify.....though I have no idea about how to go about doing so. I have never seen salsify.
-----Black Salsify with Caramelized Lobster Tails and Mache A recipe from Emeril....gives me a bit more of an idea of how one goes about using salsify. I had to look up mache.
-----Sesame Salsify. Recipe description tells some of the health benefits of salsify. I cannot make this one because I have problems with soy due to my thyroid (hence, no tufu for me).
-----Light and Creamy Oyster Chowder with Salsify "If you have trouble finding it (in fact, Mary Ellen Carroll and Donna Wingate had to ask architect Charles Renfro to bring some to Boston from New York), you can substitute Jerusalem artichokes (sunchokes) or, as a last resort, the pedestrian potato."
-----Sea Bass, Broccoli and Black Salsify From Gordon Ramsay's "The F Word." I am adding sorrel to my "Never Cooked with List."
-----Pan-Roasted Squab with Salsify It is suggested to pair this dish with a sangiovese wine.
-----Chicken with Salsify in Pastry
-----Cream of Salsify and Mushroom Soup
-----Rich and Creamy Salsify Gratin
-----Thai Fried Chicken
-----Buttery Salsify Puree with Horseradish

5. The library does not have Gordon Ramsay autobiography...."Humble Pie." I either need to wait for it to be purchased by one of the local libraries....or buy it on Amazon. I wonder how many humbling life experiences are mentioned....Gordon Ramsay is OFTEN painted by the media as being pretty far from humble.

8.

I had the worst problems with my thyroid this past week. I had allergy problems, reactive hypoglycemia (very LIKELY at least), goiter issues from Hashimoto's Disease, a reaction to a LOT of soybean oil (that I didn't know I was eating so much of) and what I think was a spider bite ALL AT THE SAME TIME.

9.

-----I have been hoping that Bret Michaels will get better. I DISAGREE with a lot of things in his lifestyle (I have to be honest). I admire Bret's talent, creativity, intelligence and the fact that he is very honest about what he thinks.
-----What would you include in a workout that you designed? Lately I have been doing "bicycle" exercise that one learns in grade school. :-)

10. Katie Holmes to portray Jackie Kennedy.  Greg Kinnear as JFK???....this is one actor that I usually just don't get interested in their portrayals.
-----Jackie Kennedy's White House Hot Fruit Dessert I am glad that the jarred prune can be added "to taste." We have a can of prunes in our pantry....I expect it will be there for a long time.

11. Man stabs 28 children in nursery school attack. :-(

12. Best and Worst Lawnmowers

13. Hmmm....imagine the reaction someone would have at having their cannabis seized and then finding out that it was to become compost.

THURSDAY THIRTEEN

Tuesday, April 27, 2010

Checked out (and reading) this book from the library. :-)
-----Hmm. It is obviously to late for me to start saving for college in high school....though this is SUCH A SOUND IDEA. This, of course, would only apply if one's parents let one work and if the money weren't mandated to go to family expenses.

Laura Garza :-(

Laura Garza was a young woman missing in New York for about a year-and-a-half. Skeletal remains have just been found in Pennsylvania. While this does bring closure, I was hoping for the improbable happy ending. I send virtual hugs to Laura's family....who looked for her so long and advocated so bravely.
 :-(

Laura went out for an evening at the Marquee Nightclub and wasn't heard from since. Foul play is suspected and the case is being treated as a homicide.

Laura Garza came to New York dreaming of going to dancing school and becoming an instructor.Laura was 25-years-old.

Anyone with information is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 1-800 577-TIPS or text tips to 274637 then enter tip577.

-----Refried bean swastikas This is part of the protest over immigration laws in Arizona.
-----Not everyone in Fred Phelp's family acts the same way on their beliefs.  Nowhere in the article does it actually say what Nate Phelps beliefs are....other than he objects to the way that Westboro expresses their beliefs.

Clam Chowder

-----The Cliff House Clam Chowder (Ogunquit, Maine)
-----Clam Chowder Pie
-----Vegan Clam Chowder
-----Clam 'n' Corn Chowdah (Aysgarth Station Bed & Breakfast...Bar Harbor, Maine) I am not a fan of corn in soup....though sometimes I am wrong about this (not often). I am not used to heavy cream in soup having tried it in only one batch of soup.

Thursday Thirteen....

1.
----- Listening to the Homeless I have not seen a homeless person (other than people we know who had fallen on hard luck and were traveling to a new home) in several years. Some cities manage to hide their homeless.
-----Should Franklin Graham's speaking at the Pentagon proceed as scheduled? I am also reading that the National Day of Prayer has been declared unconstitutional.

2. Recipes:
-----Fuzzy Naval Cake
-----Chocolate Buttermilk Bread
-----Baked Cabbage. Some recipes I can't visualize until I make them...this one has Miracle Whip and chili sauce...and is one I cannot really visualize yet. Before the recipe had tomato sauce (instead of chili sauce)...I will likely try it both ways.
-----Sweet and Sour Salad Dressing I am adding Tarragon Wine Vinegar to my Never Cooked With List. I hope that Tarragon Wine Vinegar can be found at supermarkets around here....there are a lot of simple things (like cranberries) that are not available.
-----Baked Brie with Apricot Preserves. Has a jalapeño in the recipe.
-----Apple Sauerkraut Potato Salad

3. No one has a pet rat in Calgary.

4.

6. President Obama's Income. I am glad for what he did with the Nobel Prize money....and wonder which organizations received it.

7. Study shows that frequent password changes are useless. What do you think?

8. Cirque du Soleil to create Michael Jackson show.

9. Pornographic magazine for the blind

10.

What do you think? I think that both sides have points.

11. Will you Tweet differently now that the Library of Congress is saving your Tweets? I have taken my Tweets private (not that I know if that will do any good...since they were originally public)...I do not know if I want any/all of my Tweets in the Library of Congress. This was not the audience I intended...I am very sure I would have written about different things had I known this was going to happen.

12. I want Star Wars training shoes. I wonder what store these were purchased at.

13. Americans love Norwegian beer. I don't think I have ever had a Norwegian beer (and I am American).

Ultimate Blog Party 2010.....

  1.  Ultimate Blog Party 2010

Welcome to my Party Post. I am "Thebluestbutterfly"...a Business and Agricultural Student. I am married to a sculptor and have a 2-year-old fur baby (Doggie). I follow the news a lot and try to be a voracious reader. I try many recipes...and some of them make it to my blog. I like to take walks. I wish for PEACE. I believe in un-schooling (up to and including the college level) and I am passionate about urban farming. In the next few years, I hope to get as far off the food grid as is possible for my area.

After looking at several dresses on PromGirl.net, I finally decided on wearing the dress below to Day 1 of the party. I am a little more conservative than most and get cold super-easily (Raynaud's Phenomenon)...so there will be a wrap around my shoulders for much of the night.

Surprisingly, I think I have become fond of full tulle skirts.
Sizes 0-16....my size is available!
I own no formals and may start saving for something like this in RL.

Would you like to win a $15 Amazon gift card???.....
Tell me which of the dresses you like best from this post in the comments.
Random Drawing immediately after Ultimate Blog Party 2010. :-)
Music:
Blip on my laptop....I have done this for Real-Life events and this works well.
-----"People are People" by Depeche Mode...this reflects a lot of my feelings to the way some people treat me and each other. That is one nice thing about a virtual party, there is no one who makes your life miserable but you are obligated to invite.
-----"The Current" by Blue Man Group....and their disco version of "The Chicken Dance." Yes, I did play the disco version of "The Chicken Dance" at a real life party (to many groans but this song is a family tradition).
-----"Cish Cash" by Basement Jaxx. I think of the video as a kaliedoscope...with tanks.
-----"Wo Is Zu Hause, Mama?"...."How High is the Water, Mama?" in German. Of course, sung by Johnny Cash
-----"The I Roc Z Song" by The High Speed Scene...makes me smile. I find singing along addictive.
-----Alabama 3's cover of "Hotel California"

Other songs played:
"Boomin' " by tobyMac (he will be playing at Cornerstone Festival and I am going), "Cosmic Universal Fashion" (a sequel to "Right Now") by Sammy Hagar,"Devil is a Loser" by Lordi, "Evil" by Interpol, "London Underground" by Amateur Transplants, Michael Damian's "Rock On" (I want to see his directorial efforts at some point), "Root of All Evil" by Abney Park, "Van Lear Rose" by Loretta Lynn

I am newly addicted to "8 Story Walkup."

An old friend of ours doing Fire Poi for the first time.

I wish that I were able to show "When You're Strange" at the party...a new documentary on The Doors. I hope it moves to a larger selection of theaters....and will be tweeting to @TheDoors with this wish.
___________________________

OF COURSE, MY SPIDER IS INVITED TO THE PARTY.

adopt your own virtual pet!

As early readers of my blog may recall, it is dark in thebluestspider's web....that is because she was accidentally swallowed by an elephant.  It is lonely when you are trapped in an airpocket in the stomach of an elephant & are forced to eat the only friends (flies) you might make.

The bluestspider is still trapped in there & has tried shouting to the elephant & sending Morse code....I guess an elephant's hearing isn't that good.  Maybe it is an evil elephant & is deliberately ignoring her.

People I would love to see at the party:
-----Daniel. I really appreciated the lessons he learned from Nanny.
-----Rick....an old blog friend who knows what the important Father's Day gifts are.
-----Frances. I like the photos of life in New York.
-----Darth Vader. He is one of the Universe's best Dads.
-----The little girl I saw at a store several years back pretending to be a cowgirl....that just strikes me as unusual anymore. She would be perfect company for some of my nieces.
-----Tammy...an extremely brave person.
-----David Johns. I would love to know how one goes about learning to photograph bears.

Day 2 of the party will find me wearing  this Quinceanera gown....with a matching bolero jacket (to stave off my usual goose-bumps-in-air-conditioning-issues). This dress reminds me of a Southern Belle. If you look closely, you can see that the dress has appliques on the skirt....I am curious to see if that stands out in real life.

Yes, if you are reading this before the last day of Ultimate Blog Party 2010, I obviously plan out outfits ahead of time. I will be live-blogging at Cornerstone in June/July and I will be working on what I want to wear a little each day...I am just like that for events that make me happy.

I think I could be brave enough to wear this one without a wrap.
Looks like a dress where heels would be good (to elongate).

I wish there could be authentic Coca Cola Blak at my party....from what I understand it is still available in Europe. I thought maybe I could find it online...I did find a lot of empty bottles that are being sold for ridiculous prices. I started looking for how to make something like Coca Cola Blak....and will be trying it during this party.

Simple and movement looks fun.
Purple/Royal...also comes in Yellow/Orange.
Beautiful with the model's coloring.

Though they smell a little odd...
Pin-cushion Proteas are the perfect party decoration.

Another of my flower arrangements.
Perfect for a party.
Actually supported by a wine bottle in the center.

Of course, one bouquet has to have a butterfly. :-)

Fascinating party conversation:
-----Famous people who started at a late age. Laura Ingalls Wilder was surprising. Have you started anything at what would be considered a late age??
-----What is your favorite browser for your computer? for your cell phone? The only browser for the cellphone that I have used so far is Opera Mini.
-----Should John Paul II be made a saint?
-----What do you think of the Cory Maye case?
-----Is anyone still keeping there New Year's Resolutions? You can work on your goals by opening a First Muse Bank account.
-----Pay-As-You-Go PCs?
-----Drinking milk helps have twins???
-----How often do you walk? America Walks....dedicated to making walkable communities. My new phone has a pedometer.
-----How often would you use an underwater MP3 player?
-----Are there currently any bloggers in captivity? Every once-in-a-while I read about a blogger who has been detained for political reasons.
-----What would your advice to President Obama be?
-----World Ebook Fair...July 4-August 4. I attend every year and try to tell as many people as I can. Fascinating.
-----Would you go on a spacewalk?
-----Illinois Freedom Run
-----Will/should the penny and nickel be phased out?
-----How to tidy up your Facebook
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT?????

Of course, everyone on the Internet should be talking about Net Neutrality!

Food:
-----Frog Legs. Cajungrocer.com I am not sure how many frog legs are in each of the measurements given on Cajungrocer. Cooks.com has many frog leg recipes.
-----Mexican Fudge...not what you think.
-----Rachel Pennington's Tomato Pie...something I have been meaning to try making for Husband for a while.
-----Bananas.....they might go extinct.
-----How to make homemade granola...for guests who are here for breakfast. :-)

I encourage everyone at the party to click at The Hunger Site. An easy, no-strings way to give 1.1 cups of food every day.

Toasts anyone???
I toast Love, Peace and the sucessful completion of goals.
We used to celebrate the end of every work week...or, more accurately, the survival of every work week.

At some point, Husband and I will get away from the party for a romantic dinner.

Hopefully, we won't light our romantic dinner on fire. :-)

In RL, on Day 2 of the party Husband and I made Turkey Minestrone.
We used the basic Easy Minestrone recipe...something we make often.
Instead of the 4 tomatoes, we used about a 16 oz. can of dice tomatoes.
This time we used 4 cups of chicken broth and 4 cups of water.
We skipped the carrots...because I ate them all.
We forget to put in the Parmesan.
We added a medium onion, a handful of leftover mushrooms, minced garlic (from a jar), and turkey.
We make the soup on the stove (instead of the crockpot).

Outdoor fun for the children at the party.
In real life, this would include MANY sparklers.
I also let children play with my keyboard. :-)

Day 5 at my portion of UBP10
In real life, this would be fun for a black and white ball.
The way the bows fall is interesting.

Now serving:
-----Black and White Cookies...read their story in the comments people have left on the recipe.
-----Mini Black and White Cookies. Black and White Cookies are a New York favorite.
-----Black and White Pizza. Sounds somewhat spicy. Seems a good one for when need tiny slices.
-----Black and White drinks. Doesn't necessarily look black and white to me. I will have to try in RL.
Black and White Angel Food Cake. From The Barefoot Contessa.

Day 5 of UBP10's RealLife events featured a concert by Chris Mann.

Day 6's Dress...Faviana...$299

The last day's party dress...eggplant and silver.
I would make up some sort of flower crown for this one.
I would have to make sure the flower crown did not look cheesy.
I love putting flowers in my hair.
I wonder what the embellishments on the top look like in RL.
Mauri Simone Dress...on sale for $129.00
The dress is available in sizes 2,4,6,8

Party smiles:
-----Making a banner that says "Thank You" and attaching it to the pile for the trash collector.
-----If I knew someone who had a crane, I could ask to borrow the world's biggest YoYo.
-----We can use the face transformer. :-)
-----Someone needs to teach me how to juggle.

Tackle It Tuesday Meme
When you're having a week long party, the cleanup makes every day "Tackle It Tuesday. :-)

Party stress  relief:
Neck exercise for the shower....personally, I carry a lot of tension in my neck. I try to do exercises like this before, after (and depending on what it is....during) a big event.

Hopefully no first aid will be need at the party...since first aid is obviously no longer being taught in schools. Several years ago I had resolved to write more about first aid and home ec topics...I need to get back to that resolve. :-)

Yes, I know there are prizes at the party.
I am even giving one away myself  (listed on the prize page....one winner gets two subscriptions....Taste of Home and Simple & Delicious). I don't know what prizes I want to win.....for the most part, any would be nice.
TOP PICK:
I would love to win the $150 dollar shopping spree from Pedal Cars and Retro Collectibles. I would use this to buy a portable record player....this has been a long-time wish of mine. (US Prize Number 1)

I like the e-gift card from "Couponing to Disney." I am Disney-obsessed. :-) (US Prize 15)

Third choice would be the Target gift certificate from Frugal Novice. I like couponing at Target...so, this would go a long way. (US Prize 32)

No big party is complete without fireworks.

(This post was partially sponsored by PromGirl.Net....I figured this was the ideal time to show the pretty dresses I found.)  :-)

The Amazon gift card I am giving away is totally sponsored by ME. :-)
This year's party is on Facebook and Twitter, too. If I find your answer about the dresses on Facebook or Twitter, I will post what you said here. That will count as being entered in the drawing....if you wish.

This is a post in progress.....I will be adding little bits throughout the party. :-)
